              • Learning new abilities within Elysium*******

This help file is split into two sections: learning and teaching. Learning new abilities: Firstly, you should decide upon an ability which you wish to learn.

Remember, a skill might be Demonology, but an ability is one of the many commands within the skill. So you cannot learn 'Demonology', but instead one of the abilities within it.

To learn a new ability, you do not have to be a member of a guild, although it certainly does help, since you are more likely to find someone willing to teach you. You should not expect people to run to your aid everytime you wish to learn something new, since when they teach you, they are distributing the power of their arts, which they may wish to keep out of the hands of their enemies.

There are three kinds of people who you may find to teach you...

The first being someone who is not in the same guild as you, and because of this, may charge you a certain amount of gold coins for the pleasure of teaching you.

The second being the guild tutor of the guild which you are a member of. The guild tutor is not a player, but a non-player character, which will respond to requests for teaching. Members of your guild should be able to direct you to this character.

The last being a fellow member of your guild. It is unusual for them to charge you anything, although they may ask that once you become more experienced, that you teach them anything that they do not know, which you have learnt in your adventures.

What limits your learning? By typing STATUS, you will see that you have a certain amount of 'lessons'. You gain lessons by being in Elysium. The longer you are here, the more you will have gained. Lessons represent how much you can take in. As you know, you can only you have, the more you can learn!

You can also gain lessons whilst your character is offline, to learn more about this, type 'help studyoffline'.

When learning from another player, you will need to use more lessons than you would from learning from a guild tutor - since the player is not an experienced teacher. If say, summoning imps cost 10 lessons to learn from a guild tutor, then to learn from a player will cost you 15 lessons.

If the guild tutor is in your location, you can ask him or her to teach you by typing LEARN <ability> FROM <skill>. e.g. learn mindcloak from mentalism

To learn from a fellow player, say to them which ability you wish to learn from which skill. They will then tell you if they have the ability in question, and if they have the time to teach you. If they do have the ability and the time, then type STUDY <player name>, where <player name> is the player you wish to learn from.

They may make you an offer to teach you a ability. If it is the ability you want, type yes, otherwise type no.

After about a minute or so, you will have learnt the new ability, and you can check this is the case by typing SKILLS <skillname> where <skillname> is the name of the skill which you have just learnt an ability from. There sitting on your list is the ability you have just learnt.

In some cases, you may find that you are not competent enough to learn a new ability. This represents you trying to learn something which is too complex for your current understanding of the skill. For instance, if the last ability you learnt within Demonology was summoning a slime, then it's unlikely that your next step would be to summon Lucifer himself!

Teaching people your abilities: You can only teach abilities to someone if they have enough 'lessons' to learn it, and they are competent enough to learn the ability in question.

If you are teaching someone an ability, where they don't have the skill which the ability belongs to, they will gain the skill after you have finished teaching them it, but there is no point in trying to teach them an ability high up in the skill, since they are new to the skill.

To teach someone one of your abilities, your student must first type STUDY <your name>. Then you should type yes to agree to the request which follows.

Now that you are in a study session, you should type TEACH <ability> FROM <skill> e.g. teach mindcloak from mentalism. If they are not competent enough, or donot have enough lessons, you will at this point be informed. If all goes well, you should begin the lesson, which should take around a minute per ability.

After the lessons finish, your student should have the ability you just taught within the skill the ability belongs to, upon his skills list.
